The Qi Haus Archive

2023-2026

Part One

Foundations (2023)

Like many organizations, Qi Haus Foundation began with a hope for a better future.

It grew from a desire to better understand the conditions that help people and communities flourish, and to explore how those conditions might be cultivated through shared experience, creativity, embodied practice, and human connection.

Founded in 2023, Qi Haus Foundation is a Philadelphia-based nonprofit dedicated to cultivating the uniquely human capacities of connection, creativity, presence, and belonging through experiential art, embodied practices, and intentional community gatherings. We believe these capacities are not luxuries - they are essential to our wellbeing and our collective future.

The first year focused on establishing the organization, developing its guiding philosophy, and identifying the questions that would shape its future work.

Rather than beginning with a fixed curriculum or a predetermined collection of programs, Qi Haus was organized around a process of inquiry. The Foundation was created to explore ideas through experience, allowing its work to develop through observation, experimentation, reflection, and community participation.

Many of the projects that would later become central to the organization had not yet been imagined. What existed instead was a growing framework for asking questions and a commitment to learning alongside others.

Success during this first year was measured less by the number of programs offered than by whether new ways of gathering, creating, and relating were beginning to emerge.

Those early questions would continue to shape the organization in the years that followed.

Establishing the Foundation

Much of 2023 was devoted to building the structure needed to support the work over the long term.

Qi Haus Foundation completed the process of becoming a nonprofit organization, assembled an initial board of directors, established governing documents, and began creating the administrative systems necessary to support future programming, fundraising, partnerships, and community engagement.

While these efforts were largely invisible to the public, they provided the framework upon which the organization would continue to grow.

At the same time, work began on defining the Foundation's purpose and identifying the ideas that would guide future exploration. Early writing reflected an expansive curiosity about human awareness, embodied experience, creativity, science, spirituality, and the ways individuals influence one another and the communities they create together.

Rather than narrowing these interests into a single discipline, Qi Haus chose to remain interdisciplinary, drawing from diverse fields while allowing future programs to emerge organically.

The First Questions

Although the language would continue to evolve, many of the questions explored during the Foundation's earliest months remained remarkably consistent.

How do people become more connected to themselves and one another?

How do creativity, imagination, movement, and shared experience influence individual and collective wellbeing?

What conditions help people feel a greater sense of belonging?

How can attention, presence, and embodied awareness be cultivated through practice?

What kinds of gatherings encourage participation rather than passive observation?

These questions did not seek immediate answers. They served as invitations to continued exploration and became reference points for the organization's future work.

By the close of its first year, Qi Haus had established its legal and organizational foundation while beginning to articulate the values and questions that would shape everything that followed.

Part Two

Finding Our Voice (2024)

With the Foundation established, attention gradually shifted from organizational development toward public engagement.

The work of 2024 centered on learning how to communicate ideas that were inherently experiential.

Many of the concepts that inspired Qi Haus - attention, presence, embodied awareness, imagination, creativity, and human connection - were easy to experience but often difficult to describe. The year became an extended process of refining language, experimenting with public messaging, and discovering ways to invite people into the work without requiring them to adopt a particular philosophy or worldview.

This period also marked the beginning of the Foundation's public identity.

Website development, written materials, fundraising efforts, community conversations, and early programming all contributed to a clearer understanding of what Qi Haus was becoming.

The organization continued asking the same foundational questions while becoming more attentive to how those questions were communicated.

Rather than asking people to understand abstract ideas first, Qi Haus increasingly invited people to participate in experiences that allowed understanding to emerge naturally.

Throughout the year, relationships within the community deepened. Conversations with participants, volunteers, collaborators, and supporters began shaping not only future programming but the organization's understanding of its own role.

The Foundation became less interested in presenting conclusions and more interested in creating environments where exploration could happen collectively.

By the end of 2024, Qi Haus had developed a stronger organizational identity and a growing sense of direction.

Part Three

Finding Form (2025)

By 2025, many of the questions that had shaped Qi Haus from its earliest days were beginning to find expression through lived experience.

The Foundation moved beyond organizational development and into a season of active exploration, creating gatherings that invited people to experience its ideas rather than simply discuss them. Workshops, community events, movement practices, creative collaborations, shared meals, witnessing circles, and intimacy exercises each became different expressions of the same underlying inquiry.

Rather than developing a single signature program, Qi Haus allowed its work to emerge through experimentation. Each gathering offered an opportunity to observe what happened when people were invited into greater presence, creativity, and authentic relating. Some experiences became recurring offerings, while others served as temporary explorations that informed what came next.

As the year unfolded, it became increasingly clear that the Foundation was not creating a collection of unrelated programs. Beneath their different forms, each experience was exploring many of the same questions: What helps people feel safe enough to be authentic? What invites genuine belonging? How do attention, creativity, and embodied experience change the way we relate to ourselves and one another?

Throughout the year, the Foundation continued refining its understanding of what it was creating. While individual gatherings differed in form, they shared a common intention: to cultivate the uniquely human capacities of presence, connection, creativity, and belonging.

Intimacy had been woven into the Foundation's work from the beginning. As both a guiding philosophy and an area of longstanding professional practice, it informed the design of early experiences, even when it remained largely implicit. As trust within the community deepened, that aspect of the work became more visible.

The Foundation increasingly explored the subtle patterns that shape how people relate to themselves and to one another. Through movement, conversation, creativity, intentional touch, witnessing practices, and collaborative experiences, participants were invited to notice the habits, assumptions, and protective strategies that can quietly shape their experience of themselves and others.

These explorations did more than deepen connection. They created opportunities for people to step outside familiar ways of being.

By introducing new forms of movement, creative expression, play, collaboration, and relational practice, the Foundation sought to create circumstances in which participants could encounter themselves differently. Qualities that had been hidden, underdeveloped, or long set aside often began to emerge naturally when people found themselves in new environments and new ways of relating.

Creativity became especially important in this process. Rather than asking people to think differently about themselves, it invited them to experiment, imagine, improvise, and participate. In doing so, people frequently discovered capacities they had not recognized before - greater confidence, tenderness, courage, curiosity, playfulness, leadership, receptivity, imagination, or joy.

Over time, Qi Haus came to understand that these experiences were not about becoming someone new. They were opportunities to uncover aspects of ourselves that had always been present, but had not yet been given the conditions to emerge.

This growing interest in human potential also led the Foundation to explore the role of sensitivity.

Drawing upon longstanding work with Highly Sensitive People (HSPs), Qi Haus became increasingly curious about what sensitivity might reveal about the subtleties of human connection, creativity, and embodied awareness. Highly Sensitive Person is a term used to describe individuals with the trait of Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS), a well-established personality trait found in approximately 20-30% of the population. Research suggests that individuals with higher SPS tend to process information more deeply, notice subtle environmental and social cues, respond more strongly to emotional experiences, and become more easily overstimulated than others.

While much of the existing literature has focused on helping highly sensitive people navigate a world that often overwhelms them, Qi Haus became interested in a complementary question. What might sensitivity teach us about human potential?

Rather than viewing sensitivity solely as a trait requiring accommodation, the Foundation began exploring whether it might also offer a unique window into the capacities for perception, creativity, empathy, intuition, and relational awareness that exist, to varying degrees, in all people. If some individuals naturally perceive aspects of human interaction that others overlook, what might they teach us about the conditions that help people, relationships, and communities flourish?

This perspective raised new questions. What becomes possible when people are given environments that honor sensitivity rather than asking them to adapt to constant overstimulation? What aspects of perception, creativity, imagination, and relational awareness emerge when sensitivity is supported rather than suppressed? How might creating spaces that welcome sensitivity benefit not only highly sensitive people, but everyone who enters them?

These questions also reflected a broader commitment to serving a population that has often been misunderstood or underserved. Qi Haus recognized the importance of creating environments where highly sensitive people could participate without feeling pressured to override or diminish their natural ways of perceiving and engaging with the world.

Although this area of inquiry had not yet developed into a dedicated program, it became an important part of the Foundation's long-term vision. With limited resources, Qi Haus focused its efforts on developing broader community initiatives while recognizing that experiences intentionally designed for highly sensitive people remained an important area for future exploration. The Foundation hopes to continue learning with highly sensitive individuals as part of its broader exploration of the conditions that help people and communities flourish.

As the year progressed, another discovery became equally important. The experiences themselves were only part of the work. What often proved most meaningful were the relationships that continued beyond them. Participants returned. Friendships formed. Volunteers became collaborators. A community began to emerge that was not simply attending events, but helping shape the Foundation's direction through its own presence and participation.

This period also marked a growing public presence. Newsletters, partnerships, fundraising efforts, and community conversations became more than ways of sharing information. They became part of the Foundation's practice of thinking in public, documenting what it was learning, inviting dialogue, and allowing its understanding to evolve alongside the community.

Looking back, 2025 was the year many of Qi Haus's founding ideas began finding their natural form. The Foundation was not only discovering what kinds of experiences it wanted to create, but also deepening its understanding of the conditions that help people uncover new ways of relating, creating, and being together.

Part Four

Art as Inquiry (2026)

The work in 2026 marked another significant shift in the evolution of Qi Haus. While creativity had always been woven throughout the Foundation's work, it increasingly became the primary way the organization explored its questions.

Art was no longer understood simply as a form of expression. It became a method of inquiry. Creative practice became a way of asking questions that could not be answered through conversation alone.

Collaborative photography, movement, immersive experiences, ritual, and participatory performance invited people to investigate ideas together rather than simply discuss them. Creative practice became a way of exploring attention, imagination, belonging, embodied awareness, and the many ways people influence one another through shared experience.

This period gave rise to several initiatives that would become central to the Foundation's identity.

The Future Speaks Through Us brought women together through movement, collaborative art, and shared creative practice to explore imagination, belonging, and the capacity to shape the future together.

The collaboration with photographer Julia Lehman expanded these explorations into participatory photography, inviting individuals to become active contributors to an evolving body of artwork rather than subjects being documented. Projects such as Mermaids & Muses explored creativity, play, devotion, and human connection through collaborative image making.

Throughout the year, Qi Haus also continued refining its public language. Increasingly, the organization described its work in terms of cultivating the uniquely human capacities of connection, creativity, presence, and belonging. These ideas had long informed the Foundation's direction, but they now provided a clearer and more accessible way of describing its purpose.

As conversations surrounding artificial intelligence and emerging technologies became more prominent, Qi Haus found itself returning to questions it had been exploring since its earliest days. Rather than viewing technological change with fear or certainty, the Foundation became increasingly interested in the qualities that remain distinctly human and the role those qualities play in helping individuals and communities flourish.

By the close of 2026, Qi Haus had grown into a multidisciplinary nonprofit whose work spanned community gatherings, embodied practices, collaborative art, educational experiences, and ongoing creative research. Although the form of the work had continued to evolve, its central questions remained remarkably consistent.

The Foundation entered its next chapter with a growing body of experience, a stronger sense of identity, and an expanding community of people committed to exploring what becomes possible when creativity, attention, and human connection are intentionally cultivated.

Part Five

Looking Forward

The history contained in this volume does not represent a completed story. It documents the first years of an organization still learning, experimenting, and evolving.

Many of the questions introduced in these pages remain open.

How do people cultivate deeper presence?

What helps communities flourish?

How can creativity strengthen belonging?

What forms of gathering invite genuine participation?

How might art, movement, and shared experience expand our capacity to imagine and shape the future together?

The answers will continue to emerge through practice.

Future volumes of the Living Archive will document the projects, partnerships, discoveries, and questions that follow, preserving not only the work itself, but the ongoing process through which Qi Haus continues to learn.
